{"id":4777,"date":"2026-06-11T14:31:40","date_gmt":"2026-06-11T14:31:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/visitvisegrad.hu\/?post_type=vl_latnivalo&#038;p=4777"},"modified":"2026-06-30T10:18:30","modified_gmt":"2026-06-30T10:18:30","slug":"keresztelo-szent-janos-katolikus-templom","status":"publish","type":"vl_latnivalo","link":"https:\/\/visitvisegrad.hu\/en\/latnivalo\/keresztelo-szent-janos-katolikus-templom\/","title":{"rendered":"Roman Catholic Church of St John the Baptist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Today\u2019s Baroque-style church, which is a listed building, <span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">(listed building registration number 7496, floor area 310 m\u00b2)<\/span> It was built between 1773 and 1782 according to the plans of Schade Leonard (L\u00e9n\u00e1rd), a master builder from Esztergom.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The main altar of this single-nave, single-tower church with a vaulted interior is adorned with an altarpiece of striking colour. It was painted by Johann Josef Hauzinger. He was a favourite painter of Maria Theresa and created the work in question in 1766, entitled \u201eChrist on the Cross with Mary, Mary Magdalene and St John the Evangelist\u201d, and it originally adorned the altar of the Sigismund Chapel in the Buda Castle. It was moved to Visegr\u00e1d after the chapel was rebuilt and renamed the Chapel of the Holy Right Hand in the 1930s. (The work had previously been erroneously attributed to the 18th-century painter Vincenz Fischer.)<br \/>\nThe church\u2019s other furnishings \u2013 the pulpit, the pews and the baptismal font \u2013 also date from the 18th century.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The church underwent external renovation in 1960. By 1973, to mark its 200th anniversary, the interior had been refurbished. In 1974, it underwent further external renovation.
