There are few towns in Hungary as beautiful and exciting as Visegrád. The view of the Danube Bend, which encircles Castle Hill, captivated many peoples even in ancient times. The Romans established the frontier of their empire here, lined with forts and watchtowers; King Saint Stephen made it a county seat, and Béla IV built a castle here. Charles Robert moved his royal court to Visegrád; Louis the Great built a palace there; and Sigismund turned it into the most beautiful royal residence in Central Europe. Much has happened within and beneath these walls: meetings of kings by day, the theft of the crown by night, jousting tournaments and lavish hospitality, sieges of the town carried out by force and by stratagem…
