Bertényi Miklós Artist Garden

👨‍👩‍👧Family-friendly🐶Dog-friendlyFor all age groupsIn the bosom of nature

For many people, Telgárthy Meadow is synonymous with family and friends picnicking there on summer Saturdays in Visegrád, as it is easily accessible by car, a meadow just a few kilometres from the town, surrounded by streams and centuries-old trees. Not everyone knows, however, that behind the old fence lies a completely different world, one envisaged in the mid-1960s by Gyula Eőry, an enthusiastic forestry engineering student.

Have you ever experienced the romance of silence?
Visit our herb garden and experience it!

During Eőry's thesis, he experimentally planted stands of Scots pine, larch, spruce and Douglas fir in the vicinity of the species native to the area, and his work was later continued by foresters and forest engineers who saw the imagination in the initiative, and thanks to the collaboration of Miklós Bertényi and Gábor Varga, Gyula Eőry's former dream officially became an arboretum.

In the 1980s, the arboretum was enriched with an ornithological school, and in the middle of the same decade (1985), the FAO Forestry Section of the United Nations organised its annual international meeting here, during which a tree was planted by delegations from each member country in commemoration of the meeting.

The Bertényi Miklós Botanical Garden, which has won major international awards, is open during the opening hours of the recently opened forest restaurant at the entrance.

If you wish, you can also ask for a guided tour by prior arrangement.
Of course, we don't necessarily want to offer you company for one of Visegrad's most romantic walks...

Did you know?

The oldest tree in the Bertényi Miklós Botanical Garden is a huge stumpless oak, which experts estimate to be 350 years old. When Buda was recaptured from the Turks in 1686, the tree was almost 20 years old.
