This year, from 18 to 24 June, anyone interested can take part in the Order of St George’s traditional summer school in Visegrád.
The Medieval Academy was founded in 1993 under the auspices of the Order of Knights, and 13 years later it continued its mission of academic and educational outreach under the name Summer University. In recent years, it has been organised under the name Dr István Bárdos Summer University, but its aim remains unchanged from the very beginning: to draw attention to the sheer volume of research that is added year on year to the fields of domestic and international archaeology and history, and, within these disciplines, particularly to work focusing on the Middle Ages.
This year’s line-up of speakers will once again include (to name but a few distinguished figures from among the excellent speakers) Mária Prokopp, an art historian and recipient of the Széchenyi Prize; Dr Zsombor Jékely, Deputy Scientific Director of the Museum of Industrial History; Dr Adrienn Körmendy, codicologist and former Consul General in Kraków; and Professor Emeritus István Draskóczy, historian and former university lecturer. The speakers represent the very best of Hungarian academic life, but alongside these well-known figures, young researchers are also making their presence felt in Visegrád, such as Bence Biró, a PhD student at the Faculty of Humanities of Pázmány Péter Catholic University (PPKE), who will deliver a groundbreaking lecture on the development of urban culture in Upper Hungary during the Anjou period, using the city of Zsolna as a case study, and presenting the findings of his latest research.
As well as the lectures, the 29th Summer University also offers interactive programmes, as part of which participants can visit the Salamon Tower and the Royal Palace together, guided by archaeologists Gergely Buzás and István Kováts; and, amongst other exciting opportunities, a boat trip on Lake Zebegény also awaits participants.
The patron of the 29th Dr István Bárdos Summer University is Dénes Eőry, Mayor of Visegrád, whilst its chief patron is Dr Eszter Vitályos, Deputy Minister and Parliamentary State Secretary at the Ministry of Culture and Innovation.
The Summer University open to anyone interested and free of charge, however advance registration is required. We can do this using the contact details below:
