Visegrad ranked first in 2025 in terms of number of nights spent

Although Budapest and the area around Lake Balaton continue to top the list, Visegrád still managed to come 18th, achieving higher figures than towns such as Balatonlelle, Fonyód, Esztergom and even Székesfehérvár.

In numerical terms, this amounts to 327,000 guest nights in 2025, which, whilst impressive in its own right, is particularly so when compared with towns that have enjoyed a prominent status in the tourism sector for many decades, such as, in addition to the examples above, Tihany (235,000), Szilvásvárad (126,000) or even Keszthely (321,000).

Visegrád therefore came 18th in the list of the top 50 towns and villages with more than 100,000 guest nights.
This is a particularly significant achievement given that the effects of the events of 2020 only began to normalise in 2022, whilst the medium- and long-term effects of the enforced closures are still being felt in many places to this day, as the COVID-19 pandemic had the most severe impact on the hospitality and tourism sectors, both directly and indirectly. International visitor numbers remained below pre-2020 levels for many years, and a truly significant change in this area did not occur until 2025.

Another factor contributing to the rise in these figures is that, over the last five years, the number of private accommodation providers nationwide has increased by 50%, whilst the number of commercial accommodation providers has also risen by 20%, meaning that both the potential for domestic tourism and the capacity developed to accommodate foreign visitors have been further enhanced.

It is interesting to note that, of Budapest’s 18 million guest nights in 2025, 40% of the total were accounted for by the city itself, whilst 87% of hotel guests were foreign visitors. This clearly illustrates the significant role played by regions further away from the capital in terms of domestic tourism, and this distance is relevant even when it is only a few tens of kilometres; take Visegrád, situated 40 km from Budapest, as an example.
