THE HISTORY OF THE SHIP

The ship’s history dates back to the early 20th century. It was built in 1903 at the Somorsky Shipyard on commission from the Russian tsarist dynasty. The Romanov dynasty used it as a pleasure craft; under the name Velikiy Knyaz Alexander Mikhailovich, it served on the Caucasus, the Mercury and the Volga rivers. The ship was present at every major event at the turn of the century and in the years that followed.

In 1917, it was given a new name. It was renamed Kharkiv and operated under that name until 1924. It was subsequently named Pamjaty tovarisa Azina, and later Pamjaty Azina. There is no further information about this period in the Russian shipping archives. In 1996, it came into Albanian ownership under the name Iliria. It was then refitted to its current form. During the restoration, the largest suite – which had been designed for the Tsar – was recreated in accordance with the original plans. The furniture currently found on board was also manufactured according to the plans from that period.

Part of the ship’s steam engine can still be viewed today in our exclusive café, through a truly impressive glass floor.
