26 April Roman Picnic on the Sibrik Hill

26 April Roman Picnic on the Sibrik Hill

Visegrad celebrates the founding of the city of Rome with a Roman Spring Festival Picnic.

To mark the anniversary of the founding of Eternal Rome, the Sándor Soproni Association is organising a special community picnic in Visegrád on Sunday.

This Sunday, the Visegrád association – which focuses on Roman traditions and the preservation of the region’s heritage from this period – will be holding a celebration to mark the arrival of spring, commemorating the founding of the city of Rome, accompanied by a short programme.

The Sándor Soproni Society, which is celebrating the centenary of its namesake’s birth this year, will be welcoming visitors to the sacred site from 16:00 with wine, local spring water and traditional savoury flatbread; however, anyone is welcome to bring a variety of food and drinks to the picnic.

According to tradition, Rome was founded by Romulus and Remus on 21 April 753 BC on the banks of the Tiber; this date coincides with the festival of Pales, the god of shepherds.

Date and time: 26 April 2026, 4.00 pm

Venue: Visegrád, the Roman fort on Sibrik Hill
