The Forum Theatre’s latest production is Philip King’s quintessentially English farce, set in wartime Britain in the 1940s, which was an instant hit in the West End, although its premiere was not without its dangers. Three German bombs were dropped near the theatre, but no one moved until the curtain fell to thunderous applause at the end of the performance.
In an idyllic little English town, the eccentric villagers go about their daily lives with unshakeable British resolve, in the shadow of the threats of the Second World War. Meanwhile, at the vicarage, Penelope Toop, the vicar’s wife, has a more pressing problem to contend with. When an old friend and former fellow actor drops in unexpectedly, the spinster Miss Skillon is convinced that the vicar’s wife has become embroiled in a scandalous affair. She resolves to expose everything, but a misplaced slap and a glass of cognac set off a chain of hilarious misunderstandings. Add to that a cheeky maid, an unsuspecting bishop, an escaped German prisoner of war dressed as a priest, a visiting vicar, plus a policeman who doesn’t understand a thing, and a wonderful, hilarious chaos unfolds…
