The Pilis Mountains are teeming with easy hiking trails and breathtaking destinations, and are easily accessible from Visegrád. One such destination is the legendary Pap-rét.
If you’re thinking of a spring outing that’s easy to manage – one you could even do with children – and would like to explore something a little off the beaten track rather than the usual, well-known spots, we’d be delighted to recommend Pap-rét, near Pilisszentlászló. The meadow, which is crossed by the National Blue Trail, is a true hidden gem, set in beautiful surroundings and well known amongst seasoned forest walkers.
The artificial lake in the centre was created in the 1700s by local people to provide water for their grazing livestock; today, however, this lake – which is now classified as a wetland – has become an integral part of the natural environment, and it is home to numerous protected plant and animal species.
Nearby are Szekrényes-kő and Borjúfő; on the latter hill, there is a lovely viewing point from which, in good weather and with low humidity, we can enjoy a superb view of the Danube Bend stretching out below us. Not far from here is Pálócki Meadow, which is also well worth a stroll to; indeed, if we set off from the Apát-kúti Valley in Visegrád (not far from this point, you can still park your car conveniently at one of the authorised parking spots on the edge of the forest), you can easily make your way up to Pap Meadow, even with a pushchair.
The Visegrád–Pap-rét route is an easy walk that promises plenty of sights and excitement; and, proceeding at a leisurely pace, we can set off with confidence, even taking into account the time required for the round trip, and on returning to Telgárthy-rét, you can even treat yourself to a delicious trout lunch to mark the end of your hike at the Ördögmalom Restaurant, a cosy, family-run forest inn in the Apát-kúti Valley.
