This year, on 23 March, the „sajbázás’ – which was ‘moved’ to the period before Pentecost nearly 25 years ago – will take place.

Originally, in accordance with Swabian tradition, the Germans of Visegrád used to hold their ‘saibáz’ on 24 June, that is, on St John’s Eve.
Older people will recall that in the 1950s, the tradition was still very much alive and had a specific venue, and as fire safety regulations had far less of an impact on people’s activities back then than they do today, young lads would slide down the hillside above the Apátkúti Stream. „A sajba for Marina!” „A sajba for Juli!”, and so on – with shouts like these, they „fired off” the burning wooden discs, which the girls were waiting for below, and diligently collected the little symbols that had been extinguished in the stream. It’s not hard to guess: the girl who ended up with the most burning discs was the real winner of the evening…

These days, in Visegrád, the fishermen are now casting their lines into the Danube.
This year, this truly unique event is being organised at the Tree of Life sculpture under the leadership of Imre Szebeni, starting at 6.00 pm, just in time to witness the spectacular sight of the fiery discs soaring and then fading away over the water.
