On the second Saturday in August, Tarsoly, led by Junior Prima Award winner Mátyás Bencze, will give a special concert on the terrace of the Royal Palace Chapel. Their programme commemorates the Battle of Mohács, which took place 500 years ago this year; a battle that fundamentally shaped the destiny of the Hungarian people and, through its tragedy, also brought an era to a close.

The folk music ensemble formed in Vác presents an evening entitled „In Memory of Mohács”, offering a unique historical overview featuring elements of early music and poetry, with folk music naturally taking centre stage. It reveals just how deeply Mohács is ingrained in the Hungarian people’s collective memory; what impact it had – not only through the well-known mechanisms but also in micro-level ways – on the lives of individual villages, families and individuals; and how it transformed, once and and forever, the Hungarians’ self-image, how it reshaped our reflections on the past, and how it shaped a national consciousness spanning centuries, which distinguishes between the two Hungaries: the one before Mohács and the one after.

Tarsoly worked for many years with the State Folk Ensemble and the Dezső Fitos Company; since 2015, it has been the resident accompanying band of the Bartina Folk Dance Ensemble.

This is how they describe their relationship with music and tradition: „This isn’t just our hobby; it’s our profession. This duality embodies what is dear to us, as well as the daily routine that brings it into focus. Playing music together is the best, just as listening together is the real thing, for it is the sense of community that makes the feeling evoked by music almost otherworldly.”
