Zsitvay Lookout

🏔️Panoramic

This is an important stop on a number of beautiful hiking trails. However, to reach Visegrád’s highest vantage point, you don’t need hiking boots – it can be reached from the town itself, yet on a clear day, the view from up there stretches from the Mátra Mountains to the Zsámbék Basin, a distance of roughly 100 km. And yet the Zsitvay Lookout Tower, built on the summit of Nagy-Villám in 1933, stands at „merely” 378 m…

The lookout tower was erected to mark the 20th anniversary of the Hungarian Tourist Association, and its design was intended to pay homage to Visegrád’s historical past, hence its fortress-like form.
Upstairs, on the viewing level, illustrations arranged in a circle help visitors find their way around, organised to correspond with the panorama.

The building named after Tibor Zsitvay was designated a listed building in 2005.

Did you know?

The highest point of the Pilis is Pilis-tető, at an altitude of 756 m. Although Dobogókő (700 m) is by no means dwarfed by it, contrary to a common misconception, the famous Dobogókő lookout tower is not the highest point of the Pilis.
