The five buildings designed by Imre Makovecz form an emblematic part of Visegrád’s built heritage. Thousands of people visit Visegrád every year specifically to see these works, so our mini-series is aimed primarily at them, as well as at anyone interested in 20th-century architecture, and specifically in the organic style for which Makovecz is renowned in Hungary.

The Mogyoróhegy Restaurant – whose name says it all – is very easy to find at the top of Visegrád, at the foot of Nagyvillám, not far from the entrance to the Mogyoróhegy nature trail, which has been so popular with families visiting us for many decades.

This restaurant is the town’s oldest forest restaurant, built in the second half of the 1980s, at the same time as Imre Makovecz’s other works in Visegrád, including the Mócsai Farm and the Forest Cultural Centre, both of which lie very close to this spectacular restaurant.

With a capacity of 100 indoors and a further 120 on the terrace, the venue not only provides catering for the campers who visit the Erdészeti Forest School each summer, but also welcomes visitors for à la carte dining during its opening period.

The building seems to be an integral part of the land, forming a unified whole with the row of buildings of which this hexagonal, homogeneous, free-standing wooden structure is an emblematic part. In fact, from the yurt-like section right up to the wall of the chapel, we find elements symbolising sacred spaces – it is well worth taking a walk around to examine these architectural features closely, as they may not be immediately obvious at first glance.

Another interesting feature of the Mogyoróhegy Restaurant is that, thanks to its location, it offers a beautiful view of the distant mountain ranges of the Börzsöny on the opposite bank of the Danube, and, looking around, we can also admire the peak of Nagyvillám, as well as the Pilis Mountains that surround us, with their blend of monumentality and a friendly atmosphere.
