The band was formed around the turn of the millennium under the leadership of Mihály Borbély (winner of the Artisjus, eMeRTon, Gábor Szabó and Liszt prizes), who is equally at home in the realms of folk and world music, jazz and contemporary music. Their improvisational music is characterised by a fusion of various jazz styles and the folk music heritage of the Carpathian Basin and the Balkans, featuring intriguing melodic twists, rhythms that are at times delicately translucent and at others powerful, as well as elements of contemporary music. In addition to their concerts in Hungary and across Europe, the eMeRTon Award-winning band has performed twice to great acclaim in Mexico. To date, they have released six albums on the prestigious BMC label, two of which (Meselia Hill and Gyere hozzám estére) won the “Hungarian Jazz Album of the Year” award in a critics’ poll organised by the respected Hungarian music magazine Gramofon. Their latest album was released on vinyl in May this year by Fonó.
One review describes one of their albums as follows, which also serves as a characterisation of the band: “To be honest, it’s been a long time since I’ve heard a Hungarian jazz album of such consistently high quality. These four musicians are world-class in their field, and what they have created embodies both the universal elements of jazz and the diverse atmospheres of Hungarian folk music.“
